3. Kids and COVID: Maricopa and Pima county study shows the importance of mask requirements in schools
A recent study was conducted in Arizona to evaluate the relationship between face mask policies in Maricopa and Pima county (K-12) schools and COVID-19 school-associated outbreaks between July and August of this year. 1,020 K-12 public schools were included in the study, 191 of which had a COVID-19 outbreak during the follow-up. Schools without a mask mandate in place had significantly more outbreaks compared to those with a mandate.
The study found that school-associated COVID-19 outbreaks were 3.5 times more likely in schools without a mask requirement, compared to those with a requirement in place at the time the school opened for in-person learning.
The results of this study are a stark reminder of the importance of mask wearing, even for children, to reduce the risk of COVID-19! For information on ways for children to stay safe in schools, visit our previous update.
The next update will cover information on what the future of COVID-19 may look like. If you would like to learn more about this and other topics related to COVID-19 in Arizona, please complete next week’s AZCOVIDTXT survey that you will receive via text in about a week.
