2. All Things Vaccines: Overcoming Barriers to Vaccination

There are many people who report wanting to get the vaccine, but who are running into real world challenges when it comes to making it happen. We have collected these challenges, and offer some suggestions to help overcome these barriers. Remember, even if you have always been healthy and feel confident that the virus would not seriously affect you, the vaccine helps reduce your chance of spreading the virus to others who may be vulnerable to serious disease. Vaccination is about you AND about others around you.

Visit vaccines.gov or text your zip code to 438829 to find a COVID-19 vaccination site near you!

You may still have concerns about the safety or necessity of the vaccine. Visit our previous Update pages for reliable answers to common questions:

Potential Barriers Suggestions to Overcome Potential Barriers
I can’t afford to take sick time or time off to deal with symptoms.
  • The first dose typically doesn’t have strong symptoms, so many people report that they didn’t need to worry about taking sick time off after the first vaccination.
  • The second dose is associated with more symptoms, usually resolving in 48 hours or less. Some people have reported that they are arranging their vaccinations for the last day of their work week, e.g. Friday, so they have the weekend to recover if needed.
I can’t get time off work to go get the vaccination appointment.
  • Many vaccination sites are offering early morning, evening, and weekend appointments for just this reason. If your primary care provider doesn’t have times that work for you, consider other sites like pharmacies and supermarkets.
  • Some people have reported that their employers are allowing time (sometimes even paid time) to go get vaccinated during the work day, but are not always advertising this fact. Ask your supervisor if this is a possibility for you.
I don’t have a car or local public transportation options and can’t get to a vaccination appointment.
  • If getting to your primary care provider is difficult, consider a nearby pharmacy or supermarket as an option.
  • Until July 4, 2021, Uber and Lyft are both providing free transportation to vaccination appointments, with some limits. Lyft is offering two trips, up to $15 each. Uber is offering up to 4 trips, up to $25 per trip. Download the app or visit the companies’ websites to learn more.
I am homebound and can’t get to a vaccination appointment.
  • Contact your county health department to find out if there are any local services providing home vaccination. In many counties across the U.S., public health departments have teamed up with EMS to provide this service.
There aren’t any available appointments
  • Compared to even a month ago, there are hundreds more sites and appointments available. In most states, pharmacies and supermarkets, as well as public health department sites and primary care providers, are all able to offer vaccination appointments. Visit vaccines.gov to find a location near you with available appointments!
I don’t have a primary care provider to get the vaccine.
  • You do not have to have a primary care provider. Vaccination appointments are open at a wide variety of places (pharmacies, supermarkets, etc.) and are free to all people in the U.S.
I am an undocumented immigrant.
  • COVID-19 vaccinations are available for free to all people in the U.S. regardless of citizenship or immigration status. A social security or government ID may be requested, but are NOT required.
I don’t have any health insurance.
  • COVID-19 vaccinations are available for free to all people in the U.S. regardless of health insurance status. Your insurance information will be requested, but is NOT required to be provided. You cannot be billed for vaccination services if you are uninsured.
I can’t afford to pay for a doctor’s appointment or vaccination.
  • COVID-19 vaccinations are available for free to all people in the U.S. If you are visiting your primary care provider solely for a vaccine, you should not be charged for a visit. Be clear when scheduling your appointment why you are there.
  • If you are concerned that you may be charged for a doctor’s office visit, you can visit a pharmacy, supermarket, public health vaccination site, etc., for an alternative way to receive the vaccination.
I only want one specific vaccine, (e.g. Pfizer, J and J, Moderna), but my primary care provider is not carrying the one I prefer.

The next update will cover more information on CDC updated mask guidance for fully vaccinated individuals. If you would like to learn more about this and other topics related to COVID-19 in Arizona, please complete next week’s AZCOVIDTXT survey that you will receive via text in about a week.
