2. All Things Vaccines: Updated COVID-19 child vaccination eligibility
With recent changes to the COVID-19 vaccine eligibility, it can be hard to track who can get vaccinated and when. Promoting vaccination is essential to keep individuals and communities healthy and is the best way to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The new COVID-19 vaccine eligibility is aimed toward children 6 months to 4 years, who are often at a higher risk for a COVID-19 infection as they have not had prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2 infection. While children generally experience milder symptoms of COVID-19 than adults, some children become very ill and have been hospitalized. Asthma, diabetes, heart disease, immunosuppression, obesity or any genetic, neurological or metabolic conditions can make children at higher risk for severe illness. Children under a year do not have fully developed immune systems and are also considered at higher risk.
As of June 18, 2022, the CDC has updated its recommendations for children, allowing children ages six months and older to be eligible for vaccination. The new recommendations are as follows:
Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine:
- A two-dose series is recommended for children ages six months to 5 years old.
- A third dose is available for children in this age group with moderate to severe immunocompromise 28 days after the second dose.
Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine:
- A three-dose series is recommended for children ages six months to 4 years old.
